ONE OF MANY STORIES

THE STORY OF 14 YEAR OLD JOSEPH

Joseph is in the 9th grade, and is one of 18 young people who serve on our high school leadership team. He has been attending our programs since he was 9 years old. I found out a few months ago that his mother, sick with AIDS, had moved back to the rural homestead where she is from - usually a sign that the end is near. Joseph was left at home alone to guard their shack, finding himself in the desperate tension common to so many children here whose parents, although still clinging to life, have long ceased to function as anything resembling mother or father.

Because Joseph’s mother is an illegal immigrant from Botswana he has no birth certificate or ID of any kind, making any form of government assistance an impossibility. For the past 6 months, Joseph has survived through his connection with Key of Hope. We provide him with a food parcel each month - his only food. We pay his school fees - without which he would have been forced to drop out. We purchase his train ticket to ride to school each day - otherwise a three hour round trip walk.

With no one to provide, protect, or speak for them, children who live alone are vastly more vulnerable to crime, abuse, and difficulty. Last week, a neighbor tried to steal the makeshift electrical box that provides power to Joseph's shack. Joseph could do nothing but stand there and watch as the man grew frustrated and then finally gave up, leaving the box destroyed.

Joseph’s shack is literally falling down around him. With no windows, a low sagging ceiling, and a damp dirt floor, this little hovel is something akin to living in a dank crawlspace. Feeling the soul crushing weight of depression and hopelessness that haunted his long, lonely, candle lit nights, with tears raining down this strapping young man’s cheeks as he confided in Key of Hope staff: “I don’t know what would have happened to me without Key of Hope.”

We are reminded of the biblical story of Ishmael, tossed out by his father and dying of thirst in the wilderness. Totally dehydrated and weakened to the point of death, his cries must hardly have been audible to the human ear, and yet an angel came and declared to his already grieving mother that “God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand…”

Something deep within us bears witness that God has heard the cries of children like Joseph, and we hear the very same declaration today: “Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand!”

Will you help us lift up the boy?
