In 2007, Dan and Rachel Smither started the ministry of Key of Hope in Durban, South Africa-at the epicenter of the global AIDS epidemic. Over the ensuing 15 years, Key of Hope has grown from a few children sitting on a sidewalk for games and a lesson, into a thriving fixture in 17 different slum areas, serving over 2,500 children every week through a variety of strategic programs.

As children grew older but continued to attend Key of Hope year after year, we realized we needed more programs to meet the needs of any child at any age. From weekly home visits and Saturday morning "Kidz Klub" gatherings grew several other programs including: a feeding program, the Sound of Hope children's choir, Hope Academy tutoring, a daycare program, a young adult group and leadership development among others. One of the greatest blessings of all is to see a child grow up in Key of Hope, reach adulthood, and then choose to give back to the ministry they have been a part of for so long.

We currently have over 40 staff members many who were once part of the Key of Hope program as children and youth. Key of Hope has produced five US choir tours, conducted 10 spring camps for over 1000 children, and hosted more mission teams than we can count. And yet we know that God still has more for us to do!
